Penicuik House – Great walk.
We are often asked by guests were to go for a nice walk. Of course we are surrounded by the beautiful Pentland hills, but for those wanting a more leisurely walk without hills, then Penicuik House and grounds are just the answer.
Penicuik House and grounds lie West of the town of Penicuik, about 4 miles from Rutherford House. There is a car park just off the main road where you can leave your car and explore the area.
The House itself dates back to the 17th Century and has been in the Clerk family since it was built. There was an unfortunate fire in the main house in the late 1800′s and it destroyed the interior of the house although to this day the external walls remain. The Clerk family then commissioned an overhaul on the then Stable Block and Shooting Lodge, which has now been converted into the family home for new generation of Clerk’s.
The house sits in 1,389 acres of designed landscape with the River North Esk flowing through the grounds. Great place for an afternoon stroll.

Last weekend we decided to take some much needed fresh air and drove over to Roslin village. Here it is home to the infamous Rosslyn Chapel as well as the much visited and walked Roslin Glen Country Park.
The Chapel is open all year round and is most definitely worth a visit. It is nearly 600 years old and took over 40 years to build with stunning architecture. However last weekend we decided to walk through Roslin Glen which stretches along the North Esk river. It was once home to Scotland’s largest gunpowder mill but is now home to plenty of wildlife. If you are feeling energetic you can walk from Penicuik along the river right up to Dalkeith.
We however decided on the shortened version, however came away thinking that one of these days we will do the full stretch from Penicuik.
Our opening weekend of the year kick’s off with our guests attending one of our local Bread Courses near Edinburgh, Bread Matters near Penicuik, Midlothian. All our guests share a great fondness of bread and we try to offer a range of breads from our local Community bakers, Bread Share for them to enjoy during their stay.
