Penicuik House – Great walk.
We are often asked by guests were to go for a nice walk. Of course we are surrounded by the beautiful Pentland hills, but for those wanting a more leisurely walk without hills, then Penicuik House and grounds are just the answer.
Penicuik House and grounds lie West of the town of Penicuik, about 4 miles from Rutherford House. There is a car park just off the main road where you can leave your car and explore the area.
The House itself dates back to the 17th Century and has been in the Clerk family since it was built. There was an unfortunate fire in the main house in the late 1800′s and it destroyed the interior of the house although to this day the external walls remain. The Clerk family then commissioned an overhaul on the then Stable Block and Shooting Lodge, which has now been converted into the family home for new generation of Clerk’s.
The house sits in 1,389 acres of designed landscape with the River North Esk flowing through the grounds. Great place for an afternoon stroll.
The Royal Highland Show 2014 is almost upon us. It starts on June 19th and goes on until June 22nd.
It is a super family day out with everything from cattle and tractors to up market stalls selling local crafts and delicacies. You can easily spend the whole day and more browsing at all it has to offer. There are some great places to eat and try some of the local produce.
The venue is at Ingliston, just beside Edinburgh Airport, and around a 25 minute drive from us avoiding the city so a nice easy drive there. We still have some accommodation available during this period, so please either call us on 01968 660031 or use our on-line booking engine.

Last weekend we decided to take some much needed fresh air and drove over to Roslin village. Here it is home to the infamous Rosslyn Chapel as well as the much visited and walked Roslin Glen Country Park.
The Chapel is open all year round and is most definitely worth a visit. It is nearly 600 years old and took over 40 years to build with stunning architecture. However last weekend we decided to walk through Roslin Glen which stretches along the North Esk river. It was once home to Scotland’s largest gunpowder mill but is now home to plenty of wildlife. If you are feeling energetic you can walk from Penicuik along the river right up to Dalkeith.
We however decided on the shortened version, however came away thinking that one of these days we will do the full stretch from Penicuik.
We are currently closed due to some major interior renovations being done. We hope to open again mid to late February 2014. Please call us on 01968 660 031 with any enquiries you may have.
We are taking our “Green” policy to the next level and are about to install a new Eco friendly Bio-Mass boiler system to the house to replace the existing oil system.
We look forward to opening in February with all the interior changes complete, and apologies if you were looking to stay with us during our period of closure. Please try us again from mid February.
We have recently added a booking facility to our website. Previous customer feedback was that it would facilitate their booking with us, particularly guests from overseas.
So you can now see our rates and availability from here. We will try our utmost to keep this up to date at all times, although you are welcome to call us if you are unable to book, just in case we have had a cancellation for your preferred dates. Our rooms are also able to be made into different room types, so if the booking system does not allow you to book the room type you require, then again please give us a call.
If anyone experiences any issues while trying to book then we would like to hear about it. Your booking experience is important to us.
We are very excited to have finally finished our new website, so thank you to all of our users and guests for your patience:)
Although our previous site looked good, it was not responsive and so would not scale down to be viewed properly on ipads, iphones, smart phones, tablets and all the technology that is ever evolving…We are fully aware that more and more people are using their phones and tablets to book accommodation on-line, and thought it was time for us to move with the times and keep ahead to the game.
We hope that you have a good user experience when viewing our site, and would be grateful for any feedback you may have.
